This is the third book in this series I've read, and I've enjoyed all of them despite the fact that I'm admittedly not a pet person. The author has a talent for personifying the animals in the stories and actually showing how they function in their jobs. It adds a unique element to the stories. I particularly liked this book because Lauray and Jori were great characters, an ex con and an amputee suffering from PTSD. Both had been robbed of many of their dreams for the future. Jori has done her best to move forward with her life and make the best of a situation out of her control. Lauray has handled his amputation well but is still stuck in the past dwelling on the death of his military K9 partner. He is coerced into trying a service dog by his half sister, but he really wants nothing to do with the cute girly dog he is given. He wants the dog's trainer, Jori, but only for a quick night between the sheets, nothing permanent.
Jori thinks she can handle one night with no strings attached, but something about Lauray (Law) gets to her. She wants to help him, but instead he prides into her past and offers to help her instead. He wants to use her to find out what happened to him and his K9 in Afghanistan and offers to help her clear her name in exchange. He thinks he can keep his distance from Jori, but he quickly discovers he cares more than he wants to. He becomes her defender, and she becomes his protector. In the meantime, Law begins to bond with his service dog, Sam, despite his determination to return her. Sam proves her loyalty to Law daily and begins to make herself indispensable. In the end, it takes Law, Jori, and Sam working together to find the answers they both need.
I was totally caught up in the story and enjoyed seeing how the relationship between Law and Jori developed.
I received an ARC from Net Galley for review.
