I highly recommend you read book one before you start this one. Though each book has a definite end, threads of the story are woven throughout and not quite fully unraveled. Vitus was introduced in the previous book when he is dragged into helping his brother with some covert operations. Vitus, his brother, and a few other spec ops types are party of a highly classified unit working to uncover political corruption at the highest levels among other things. Damascus's father is one of those political officials. He is set to run for the country's highest office, but he needs his daughter to toe the line and by remaining under his thumb. Damascus is resigned to her fate since she has bowed to her father's will for the last few years in order to protect Vitus. Vitus, on the other hand, is closed off and bitter. He has no idea what really happened when Damascus left him, so he views her as exactly what she portrays, a spoiled princess.
When a threat to Vitus comes to light, Damascus risks everything to keep him safe even though all he seems to feel for her is contempt.
The story features a very strong heroine and a highly cranky hero. There is plenty of action and no shortage of steaminess. I'm ready to see who gets featured in the next book.
I received an ARC from Net Galley for review.
